Four half-day Training Electives will be held on Sunday, March 13. The Training Electives will be run simultaneously, please select the morning and/or one afternoon session. There is a $90.00 registration fee for one workshop or a $150.00 registration fee for two workshops (includes materials). Lunch is on your own. Pre-registration is required.


Training Elective #1 Collective Bargaining A through Z          8:30 AM-11:30 AM      

This half day program will be a review of the collective bargains process with an emphasis on communication at every step of the process including preparation for negotiations, development of proposals, at the table and closing and following through on the settlement. For experienced negotiator we will be focusing on your concerns and for people new to the role we will be providing tips and techniques that will make you a better representative at the table.

Training Elective #2:  Workplace Investigations Training          8:30 AM-11:30 AM

Employee and labor relations specialists are often called upon to conduct workplace investigations based on serious and sensitive allegations ranging from claims of harassment and other discrimination to allegations of workplace and/or professional misconduct. This training elective will focus on essential investigation skills required by those charged with conducting the investigation. Participants will:

*   Learn the purpose and importance of conducting a complete, fair and thorough investigation;

*   Review the key elements of an effective investigation;

*   Learn the multiple ways to conduct an investigation;

*   Discuss how to determine credibility and assess the evidence obtained; and

*   Learn how to write an effective investigation report.

Training Elective #3:  Costing a Labor Contract        12:30 PM-3:30 PM

This Training Elective will cover techniques and approaches to costing a salary schedule and associated costs, as well as provide participants with the tools to be better prepared at the bargaining table to discuss and defend through the negotiations process your positions. Through the use of interactive discussion and exercises, participants will explore the costing a salary scale (steps and lanes, percentage increases, etc.), examine and analyze the structure of their District’s salary schedules and associated costs creating a total package costing. Participants are asked to bring along with them a salary schedule, a scattagram and a laptop. As well, participants should have some basic understanding of Excel.

Training Elective #4:  Contract Language: Writing and Interpretation          12:30 PM-3:30 PM

This Elective will teach you the basic as well as the nuances of constructing contract language. Specific attention will be given to improving your skills in recognizing potential loopholes and problematic language. Poorly written contract language can lead to grievances and disputes over the meaning, interpretation and impact of that language. In this hands-on Training Elective, learn how to write clear, precise language that reflects the actual intent of the agreement.
